So far so good with the MagicJack.  Had one problem while playing x-box, surfing the web and talking on the phone.  But otherwise it's been good.  I like the fact that if you get a voice mail it will email the message to you.

I can't comment on that, since I haven't had a landline in a couple/few years now, but this definitely has me interested

I've had it in my hand 3 times when at best buy but have yet to hear from anyone who uses it so have put it down every time. Might consider next time i visit best buy, but who knows.

I'm thinking of giving this a try as well. Heard about it when it first came out and a friend used it and would call me. There are a few issues like sometimes the sound would drop for a sec or 2 but you can't beat the price if you are trying to saving money.

for the past few months we've cut bills by switching to only pre-paid cell phones, which has been ok as long as you don't like using the phone much.  Just a little while ago I picked up the MajicJack.  (got it from Best Buy so if for some reason a month from now I don't like it I can take it back.)  Set up took less than 10 minutes and placed 2 calls.  They weren't staticy and went though easily.  Looks like you need to enter the area code before every call, which is tolerable.  There is only 1 phone jack on the little box that plugs into the usb port so if you have a set up with multiple hand sets to one base it should work.  (I have 1 satellite and one base phone system, but haven't tried them yet as the handsets aren't charged up.)  An annoyance I can see is that a little dialog box will pop up on the host computer when you make or receive a call.  So far it seems ok.  I'll report more in a little while.

But I figured for $40 for the first year and $20 for the next it's worth it to try for a year.

Anybody here use MagicJack for their home telephone service?

Paying $40 per month for unlimited local & long distance through cable provider right now. Just saw MagicJack in a Yahoo Finance article (10 Things Not To Buy in 2010 - home telephone service) and wondered if anyone here has any experience with it.

If so, do you recommend ditching conventional telephone service for $40 intial MagicJack cost plus $20 after that?

Also, does it just work for a single phone, or will all my home phones work with just one MagicJack hooked into my computer?

Call clarity - clear or static-y? Does the service ever go down for maintenance, etc?

Thanks for your help!
