My daughter did the same thing, I believe it is a balance method for them. having a leg in front and in back reassures them that they can only go side to side, all part of the learning process. Just make sure that she is not cutting circulation to the leg that is under her.

Like the others, I think it is all normal, though I can't consider myself to know much about crawling cause Jackson basically skipped that step.  Started crawling at 7m and walking by 8m...  To this day (20m) whenever he tries to crawl it just looks awkward and weird.  Never really got the hang of it I guess...  Of course, its hard to get him to crawl now especially since he is running all over the place.

Thanks everyone, that's comforting to hear.

Scott, yes, you are correct. Adjusted, she's at 6-months gestational.

Sounds normal to me. One thing to keep in mind since she is a premie is that her development may appear to be behind other kids her age, when it's actually not. However many weeks she was early, subtract that from her age for a better comparison. I.e. If she was 2 months early, her motor skills development would be more comparible to a 6 m.o. Understand?

People who think they know it all really annoy those of us that do.

These things sound normal to me. My niece does the same thing when crawling.

You could always ask the pediatrician for their professional opinion.

Milestones: Sitting up & Crawling
« Reply #1 on: August 19, 2010, 02:52:10 PM »
My daughter is a preemie and now is 8 months old. A few weeks ago she started sitting up and last week she began crawling! We're very excited about her achievements.

However, I wanted to know if this is normal behavior as part of the learning process or should it be corrected....

- Sitting -
When she sits up, she will have one leg, usually the right, straight out in front of her while her other leg is bent behind her. If she's laying on her belly and wants to sit up, she will bring her right leg outward then forward. I'm guessing this is a balance thing.

- Crawling -
To crawl, she gets herself into the sit-up position then leans forward and moves her legs behind her. While crawling, she's been extending out her left knee much further out than her right. My wife and I think that she's favoring one side more than the other. If you watch her from an angle, it resembles a crab moving on the beach but she crawls forward not sideways.
