Yep Bill, you are right. It's only news because they are pushing for Green Energy. The only way to do it is to publicize every little incident that goes on offshore.
But they seem to use it at the right time to help them out.

Like on Tuesday, did anyone hear about the helicopter that went down in the gulf? Nope, not what they want you/us to hear. BTW, no one was hurt on the choper, just ahd to ditch it cause of engine malfunction.

Well the media sure never reported on it or made a big deal about now.

Well you see that's like saying that no president ever diddled an intern before Slick Willy.  People are hyper-sensitive to it right now so they're going to shove it down your throat...  "This may cause the price of gas to rise"  Suddenly everyone has full tanks...  Remember that most press is just there for the same reason as Big Brother...  Give the people what they want to see...  And they know what you want to see by the ratings.

Well the media sure never reported on it or made a big deal about now.  Plus, now a fire equals oil spilling in the Gulf when it never in the past, or it was never mentioned b/c it was news worthy.  No, I like my tin foil hat.  Took me a while to get the perfect fit and it keeps the voices in my head.   :geek:

That has my suspicions up.  Nothing was happening and eventually something happens, so Deepwater Horizon explodes.  It was pumping oil and had a failure though.  Now this one just explodes in the Gulf just as Americans are demanding we go back to drilling for oil in the Gulf.  HHhhhmmmm.  I'm not big on conspiracy theory on all, but this just stinks too much.

my thoughts exactly.

135 platform fires last year alone.   This company has had 15 fires since 2007.  So, not really a conspiracy, but just something that happens from time to time.  So you can take off the tin-foil hat now

sounds like this rig was not producing oil so that may be a relief.  Thank God everyone was found.  Wonder why all of a sudden rigs are exploding.

UPDATE: Platform Explodes Offshore Louisiana
A one-mile by 100-foot oil sheen has been seen spreading near the Gulf of Mexico production platform where an explosion and fire occurred this morning, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said.

Platform owner and operator Mariner Energy has deployed three fire-fighting vessels to the site to extinguish the fire, which broke out this morning at Vermilion Block 380 approximately 102 miles offshore the central Louisiana coast.

All 13 workers on board the platform have been evacuated and safely accounted for, Houston-based Mariner reported today. Contrary to earlier media reports, no injuries have been reported. Mariner had informed the Coast Guard that the platform was not producing today when the incident occurred, the Coast Guard spokesperson said.

The cause of the explosion and fire is unknown at this time. Mariner said an investigation into the incident will be conducted and that it has notified and is working with regulatory authorities in response to this incident.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson told Rigzone.com that seven helicopters, two fixed wind aircraft, and four Coast Guard cutters have been sent to assist in the rescue effort. The New Orleans Coast Guard office received a call at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning from a commercial helicopter company reporting the blast.

The 13 workers, who were wearing immersion suits and had evacuated from the platform into the water, were picked up by the offshore supply boat OSV Crystal Clear and taken to a nearby platform for pick-up by the U.S. Coast Guard. The workers were then to be transported to Terrebone General Hospital for evaluation.

Mariner is sole operator and owner of the platform, which is a 24-hour, manned fixed platform with two decks, heliport and crane. The platform was installed in early 1980 in 340 feet of water, and has produced both oil and natural gas since 1982.

Water depth at Vermilion Block 380, which Mariner has leased since 1974, ranges from 319 feet to 368 feet.

During the last week of August 2010, production from this facility averaged approximately 9.2 MMcf/d and 1,400 barrels of oil and condensate.

According to Rigzone.com, the Mariner platform makes a significant contribution to Gulf of Mexico production as a relatively high-volume lease and platform.

In June 2010, gas production from Vermilion Block 380 was approximately 296 Bcf, or 10 Bcf/d, which is about 3.5 times the average gas production for other leases in the same general area of the U.S. Gulf. This area includes the Eugene Island, West Cameron, East Cameron, South Marsh Island and Eugene Island lease areas.

During the same month, oil production from Vermilion Block 380 was approximately 53,000 barrels, about 2,000 b/d, which is about 10 times the average oil production for other leases in the same general area of the Gulf.

Vermilion Block 380 also is among the top six percent of gas producing leases in this area of the Gulf, with the 26th highest gas production of any producing block in the area, which encompasses more than 480 natural gas producing leases.

The lease also is in the top two percent of oil producing leases in this area of the Gulf, with the 7th highest oil production of any producing block in the area, which includes more than 420 oil producing leases.

Ok Chad, what did you do now?

Well nothing. However I was offshore today when I heard about it. I was in the Ship Shoal area though.
That platform was struck pretty hard by hurricane Ike in 2008. One of our drilling rigs was on this location during Ike. It got messed up pretty bad. It took 9 months to get the platform ready for the drilling operations. I know it's been 2 years, but I feel they must have missed something during the repairs.
Although this platform wasn't producing much, it is still a stop for the pipelines from deeper and farther offshore platforms.
I heard from the guys offshore, that a pipeline ruptured. But that is hearsay.

All the guys did get of the platform safely.

Now this one just explodes in the Gulf just as Americans are demanding we go back to drilling for oil in the Gulf.

No drilling operations were going on. It was just producing like it does everyday. If some puts a moatorium on production, get ready to see all hell break loose. Drilling is one thing, but they shut down the production facilities. Millions will be out of jobs, gas products will skyrocket in price, and then we'll have to import more.

Gulf Platform Owned by Mariner Energy Hit by Explosion, Coast Guard Says

Sept 2, 2010

A platform owned by Mariner Energy Inc. in the Gulf of Mexico, 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, was struck by an explosion, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said in a telephone interview.

The oil and gas production platform is owned and operated by Mariner, said Blaine Dinger, director of environmental safety for the company. He declined to comment further.

There are seven Coast Guard helicopters, two Coast Guard airplanes and four Coast Guard cutters on the way to the rig, according to Ranel. The platform is located south of Vermilion Bay, Louisiana, he said.
