They are in a pretty remote part of the state and Cox sucks as an ISP.
Um screw you  :KissMyAss: First off what state are you in? second i used to work for cox so i have a pretty in depth knowledge of how they operate. Thirdly Linksys is the best dont buy anything else.

lol...  i didnt say you suck man.  i said Cox does haha...  I live in AZ (if you look at my profile lol) but far south west valley.  like i said, it may be that we are so far in the middle of nowhere.  when i lived more in the city, back in 02 it was better.  though, my mom and stepdad live right downtown and theirs is pretty slow (though I am sure that is more of a computer issue rather than isp).  i do believe that being so far away from the city is one of the main problems, but it does cut in and out quite frequently.

Another with the same router as Aftr.  Mine's held out great for the last 3 or 4 years with no issues.

I've had the same router as Damian since about '05 and its been good to me.  I am not actually using it right now due to being at the in laws but when we get back to our own place I will plug it back in.  The one we are using now is definitely not in your budget lol...  I think my FIL paid about $200 for it.  Yeah and it doesn't do anything amazing.  He get sold easily on the "top of the line" stuff lol.  Personally I think it is the internet and the area that makes it pretty useless.  They are in a pretty remote part of the state and Cox sucks as an ISP.

I would have to agree with Aftr.  I also have a Linksys Router and love it.  I have my both my PC's, Xbox, Wii, my wifes laptop and my Server off of it.  I would suggest going with a Linksys, but that is just IMO.

I use a Linksys WRT54G and never had any problems w/ it.  Got three laptops, a desktop, two wii's, a netflix box, and my son's Xbox all running through it w/o any problems.  It's $67 on walmart, but if you look around you can find one for around $50 if you check other websites, including ebay.
My brother swears by Dlink as well though, and he's a computer engineer and someone I go to for help on my computers.  So that's his recommendation as well, like Fro.

Personally, I've come to loathe the netgear routers.   I've had several crash under heavy peer to peer loads.   I've been happy with Dlink.  Had some bad encounters with Belkin.  Right now I'm using a Linksys that I changed the firmware on.  The "Tomato" firmware (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) is far superior to anything I've used to date.

Need a new router
« Reply #1 on: September 08, 2010, 01:55:19 PM »
my router died a couple of days ago.  I'm pretty sure it's out of warrantee, and I don't have a bunch of money to spend.  Want to spend about 50 bucks or less.  What's a good router to buy.  I want to hook up 2 computer and a 360.  Possibly a Wii so wireless is a plus.  I was thinking of a netgear WGR614 from wall mart for around 40.  Any thoughts?
