* The Stay-At-Home Dad Handbook

Although The Stay-at-Home Dad HANDBOOK was originally published in 2004 its relevance may have hit new heights in our current economic landscape.  Peter Baylies, with Jessica Toonkel have put together a comprehensive overview on what to expect if you decide or are forced by lay-offs to become your children's primary caregiver.  The book covers the gambit of situations a S.A.H.D. will likely face as he takes on the challenges of his new job.

A few highlights-

  • Dealing with jealousy and guilt with your spouse
  • Adjusting to a new way of life
  • Cleaning tips
  • Activities to enrich you and your children and pass the time
  • Networking with other stay-at-home dads
  • Tips on working from home while caring for your children
  • Dealing with S.A.H.D. burnout
As you read through the handbook you'll find that many of the tips offered might tend to fall into the common sense territory-of "I already know that."  But included throughout the book are little sidebar stories of dads from all over the country that share their experiences that I found to be very helpful.  Giving one a stronger confidence  knowing so many other dads are having the same experiences you are having every day.  I equate it to being sort of like when you were in junior high school and thought you were the only kid who masturbated, possibly filling you with shame and embarrassment regardless of how satisfying it was.  Then you find out everybody does it and you can dump the emotional baggage and just get on with it.

The book can be found at most bookstores,  and of course Amazon.com has it.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005JWUFZY   Also, check out Peter Baylies' Official At-home dad website by clicking here.

* Stay at home dads are increasing

The term ''stay at home dads'' is used to describe a father who is the main caregiver of the children and is the homemaker of the household.  As families have evolved, the practice of being a stay at home dad has
become more common.

Stay at home dads have been seen in increasing numbers in Western culture, especially in Canada, the UK and the United States since the late 20th century. In developed East Asian nations such as Japan and South Korea, this practice is less common.

Many middle-aged men have become essentially unemployable due to heart attacks or some other physical aliment, thereby causing a role reversal for economic reasons.  At the same time, women are progressing into higher paying jobs. There are now financial ramifications in deciding whether the mother or father should become the stay-at-home parent.  In cases where the woman is the higher-paid parent, it makes more economic sense for her to continue to work while the man takes on the caregiver role.  At times the mother's job offers health benefits for the family whereas the father's does not.

Stay at home dads has, at the same time, some disadvantages and advantages.  Depending on the country or region, a stay at home dad might find more or less social support for his decision. In regions where traditional roles prevail, a stay at home dad might be shunned by a stay at home mom's peer group.  In order to find support for their choice, these men have created and joined many support networks.

But there are many advantages too.  There have been many studies done which suggest the importance of the paternal role in a child's life and benefits of the stay at home dad, the mothers will not be so stressed in search for a nanny or a daycare and for the fathers, they will have a better relationship with their children.

Here is an article about 5 Tips for the Stay At Home Dad

If you have ever had to go for an MRI, you understand how intimidating the experience can be. You may feel that you are being placed into an enclosed space in which there is little room for movement. When the procedure starts, the feeling of intimidation can give way to fear with the combination of the noise and the space limitations. Much of this fear and apprehension can be removed with the use of an open MRI. Places like Middletown Medical Imaging have the capacity to do these types of diagnostic tests in ways that put the patient more at ease.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive way of getting highly detailed and accurate images of the body. The newer equipment that allows these images to ...

One of the worst things that you might see when you look in the mirror is a cold sore on the mouth. These are small sores that seem to pop up without any kind of notice. While they are irritating and can be embarrassing, there are some things that you can do if you're looking for a cold sore quick fix or if you want to try to prevent them from forming in the first place.

Vanilla is a good product to use when you have a cold sore. Dab a small amount of vanilla extract on the sore so that it will dry out. The alcohol in the extract is believe to speed up the healing process. Licorice is another item that you can use to help with cold sores. The acid in licorice stops the spread of the virus cells ...

Try this out - learned about it through some olympic athletes who make this on the go when they're traveling and having to eat out of hotels. They DONT eat the hotel breakfast typically, believe or not ;)

1/4 cup oats
3/4 cup water

slow cook the oats on the stove.

while they cook, create a bowl mixture of:
spoonful unsweetened cocoa powder
spoonful honey
spoonful chia seeds
spoonful hemp seeds
spoonful peanut butter
1/3-1/2 cup of frozen mixed berries
1 scoop whey protein powder
spoonful milled/ground up flax seed

pour cooked oats over the top of the bowl, and BAM.

This will give you energy for HOURS upon HOURS.

And it tastes like a peanut butter and jelly/honey s...

Men who are facing a divorce or separation often experience changes that affect who they get their home and auto insurance from. Embarking on a new single lifestyle is a perfect time to consider changing the companies where you get your insurance. If you decide that now is the time for a switch, here are some things to consider.

Timing Matters

The first thing you have to know before switching insurance companies are the rules for doing so in your state. Some states require that you quit one company simultaneously with starting with another, meaning you have to have signed up for new insurance before you can leave your old carrier. This ensures that there is no gap in your coverage, a good idea even if your state does not require it by law. Some companies do off...

Married and singles parents understand that it is difficult to look after children and perform various tasks around a home. There may seem like there is always one more thing to do. Fortunately, there are helps that can lighten the load for parents and may be encouraging.

Containers and Limits

Many children love to take their toys and dump them all out on the floor. While that may be understandable, it can be frustrating to a parent who needs to go from one room or another. Sharp toys can hurt feet and may break. Therefore, consider investing in plastic containers that will hold toys. A plastic container for dolls and one for cars are good examples. Next, make a limit as to the amount of bins that can be out at the same time, such as two. The two-container lim...

Death is something that, unfortunately, everyone has to experience. And while burial is still a common choice for the last resting place, more and more people are choosing cremation. This can be due to a wide array of reasons, but mostly consumers are weighing the positives of cremation over the negatives of burial. In fact, cremation has many benefits that you just cannot obtain with traditional burial methods.

Being cremated allows family members to keep a bit of your ashes in a keepsake bracelet or keychain so they can have a piece of you with them at all times. While this may seem a little morbid to some, most people find comfort knowing their loved ones are close. This can be especially important if you ...

Most people can count on one hand the number of men they know who love to shave. Yet, in Western societies there are many circumstances that require a man, albeit begrudgingly, to shave. So the goal is to try to find a shaving technique or device that leaves a guy with a clean shave while at the same time being at least somewhat enjoyable. For many men, the solution has been to switch to a single blade razor.

Over the past few years, razor companies have boasted about their ability to add multiple blades to a single razor. They’re probably up to something like 15 blades now. Doesn’t that mean that the more blades, the better? Well, ask yourself this, over the years has your shaving experience improved or has it...
