Title: Suggestions
Post by: Keith on January 02, 2006, 12:43:22 PM
Hey all!

Please list anything and everything that you would want to see here at DaddyPlace.com.  I want the users here to make the site what they want it to be..  I'm fairly new to web design and it might take me some time to get what you guys want on here, but I will try my best.  If you have web design experience and want to help, please do.  So , please, keep the suggestions coming and we will have a great site!

I might just take you up on that.   As soon as we get alot of users here I won't be able to keep up with everything and I will need moderators to help keep and eye on everything and to come up with new posts to keep everything flowing.   I'm at work right now but when I have my next day off I'm going to start makeing the daddyplace web pages alot more professional looking and add new content.    Any suggestions on new content?

with a smaller forum I would start off with fewer sections so that the traffic appears to be greater...

i.e. - instead of all the seperate TV Shows having an entire forum, just have one "TV Shows" with seperate threads in each section.....could combine the fishing and hunting into one....Gaming could all be under one section too....

with the more sections that a smaller forum has, the less active it looks to a guest and the less likely they are to sign up

just food for thought.....

Good idea.   I won't have time to change them for a few days..  Busy working.   I will try and do that when I have a day off.

Well, I had a little bit of time to play around with the flash editor and put up an intro screen. Let me know what you think, or what changes we could make. Is it too long, too baren, too colorful or contrasting? I'm still working with Macromedia Flash MX on my PC, it's just a taking a while to get use to all of the controls and functions again.

Jason

Actually, after just looking at it a few times, I have already got a few more ideas in mind. But, I'm still interested in everyone's opinions, so let me know something.

Jason,

I like it man!   I really do..    Except the ad for FX.   LOL    I might have to pay to get rid of that, but I love the rest..   Can't wait until the main site itself is flash like that..  Excellent job man..  Thanks!

Also, I left you a private message.

you need to make the intro "skippable"  ...it is way too long and slow to watch everytime I go to this site, IMHO of course

Jeremy,

It's a work in progress..   We are seeing what Pro:FX can do..   Of course the add is because I didn't pay for it.   :)   Jason is working on flash for the webpages of the site and he is really good at it..    Thanks for your input..

Yeah, I know what you mean, the music gets a little annoying after the first 5 seconds. The "skip" button was the first thing I noticed missing after I published it, and I was just a little hasty because it was late.

So.... it has now been updated at our beloved members request.  ;)

Okay, just gave the site a completely new facelift. I know Keith will probably like it, but will want his Google Ads back to start drawing more sponsers.  ;)

So... what do you guys think? Do you like the new look? Any room for improvement(s)? Suggestions for more appealing graphics or format? (keep it clean, you wife and children might stop by to check on you  ;)  )

This site is great and getting better. I was just wondering if there was an invitation feature that could be put in. You know a feature where if we wanted to we could put in an email addy with a personal note and send it out, maybe even to several addies at once.

Just a thought.

We don't have that feature, maybe if I can find a mod to do it I will.   But, once a month we send out a Daddyplace newsletter with our new members and what's going on around here.  It is encouraged for everyone that gets it to send it out to your dad friends, and who knows, that might join too.

Hmmm..... a name!!  Lets see here.

Heres how i would name it.... Feel free to word as you wish...

Programs:  Freewares and Beta Tests Only!! then for a subtitle I'd put something like this.
** Warez will not be tolerated**
Even though I use warez.  I agree with you and they have noplace here on daddyplace.  In open forum.  then I would advice a Sticky which I can do if you want me to explaining Daddysplance stance and rules on warez in open forum.  That way noone can say they didnt know.

If you want me to do the sticky let me know......

Also, if anyone has a dire need for warez pm me and i'll send ya to the right places.  Just no open forum posting of them.....  :)

Keith, I have a suggestion to fix something that drives me crazy.  Is it possible for you to add something that is listed in the area to the left of posts?  Specifically, can you make it so a person's location, as they have listed it in their profile, shows up?  Without that it's hard to follow threads sometimes since different geographical locations can vastly effect discussions about weather, standard hospital paperwork procedures, etc.  It would be really nice to be able to see where a person is from without having to go look in their profile.  If guys don't want their location to be known then they don't have to list that in their profile.

Just a thought.

Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Keith on May 02, 2006, 08:36:07 PM
test..

ok..   Check out under my picture to the left.    If you go in your profile you can put information in the "personal text" area...   It's in your profile under forum profile information.

Is this what you wanted?
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: floridamcmarion1 on May 02, 2006, 08:46:48 PM
Not exactly.  That only works if everyone goes to their profile and puts their location there.  Is there an option in the Administrator stuff that will automatically show everyones location in some area of that box to the left?  If they didn't want their location shown then they simply wouldn't enter that information in their profile.  If it's up to each person to go to their profile and put their location in the space you demonstrated, then I doubt many would do it.

well i know this thread is pretty dry by now, but I just wondered if this would be a good suggestion.

Whenever I click a link from the "Recent Topics" It takes me to the topic as it should, but it always puts it on the last page, on the very bottom post.. I always have to scroll through up to the top or through the pages to see what the hell the topic was even about... I dont know if any body else is bothered by this maybe I just need to suck it up ;) just my $.02

Good idea..   But..  Try clicking the "NEW" beside the post and it will take you to the last post you read in that thread.    :)

Try it and see if it works.

No.  Not at this time.   The only thing that can be done is send a PM.   I have looked into that and there is software that I can add to the site.   But it was several hundred dollars.  So I wasn't able to do that right now.

Seems like it would make more sense to have a child board in the DOODs section.  I imagine some of the dads here will be in multiple races.  Be easier to create threads by race name & date than scouring a sing thread.

Just a thought.

i agree.  It would make sense to have a child board if at all possible.  Are we thinking of just big name races, or any races that we partake in as listed separately though.  I ask, because every area has different races, 5Ks and what not, but then you have those like the Susan B Komen Race for the Cure Series, and Texas has a whole series called the CENTEX Racing series.  Just some thoughts.

Keith,

After discussing this with Frank it makes sense to create a child board. I also think it makes sense to create 2 other child boards to help keep the DOODs section organized and better focused.

The way I see it:

Title: Running
Description: A place for us runners to dicuss our past and future races, and to share training ideas, tips, news and running related links.

Title: The Gym
Description: Home of daily workouts and discussions about exercise technique and equipment.

Title: Nutrition
Description: Recipes and discussions of food related to maximizing performance in the gym and life.

I like that idea Fro. It would be a place to talk about, well health issues. A place to talk about our aches and pains and to talk about what health issues we are dealing with, whether it is us or our family. It would work as a place to talk about ADHD, or Autism, or ailments that we as dads have with our kids too.

So what would the main board be for?

Everything else?  Mostly non-classified exercise stuff.   But the way it stands now, the health issues get lost amid the fitness stuff, making it harder for someone looking for issues that might be relevent to them, such as vasectomies, hypertension, hernias, impotence (it can't be long before Ramblin' starts admitting to this problem)....

Yes it did, but I couldn't make that one searchable.    So I created a newer one and it is searchable in the members section.     I believe I took the old one out so id doesn't show now.

Beef up security. Greatly reduce access to guest accounts. More verification to block bots. Remove accounts with minimal posts that have not been active in the past year. There has got to be a way to shock this site back to life..

I will take a look into that.  Back in the day I used to spend a lot of money to keep DP up in the ranks.  I just can't do that anymore.  No time and no money.  I have been working a lot of overtime the last 3 years.  But if everyone wants to try and reguvinate the site, I will do what I can.

I'll take a look at the state of affairs of SMF on a whole.  I'm sure our add-ons are outdated, as probably is the SMF version of the software.  Keith I will probably need those passwords again for the hosting.
