4 million Bumbo baby seats to be recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 4 million popular baby seats after dozens of infants and toddlers have been injured after falling out of the chairs.

The Bumbo Baby Seat is sold in the U.S. at Wal-Mart, Sears, Target, Babies R Us, and other stores.

But the CPSC commission said too many babies were getting hurt when they tumbled from the Bumbo seat when it’s placed on a table or counter top. It happened to Kevin Lamm's son Dylan, who cracked his skull in two places and nearly died on the way to the hospital.

“By the time we got there, there was no pulse. Three minutes more and they said he would be dead," Lamm said.

The South African company that makes the Bumbo seat voluntarily recalled the product in 2007 and added safety stickers that warn parents not to set the seat on high surfaces. But since then, the CPSC has documented at least 84 more injury cases, including 21 cracked skulls.

Now, another 4 million Bumbo seats are being recalled so consumers can fit the chair with a special restraining belt to keep their little ones from falling out. The safety group urges parents to stop using the Bumbo Seat until the safety belt is installed. The company is providing them free.

To order a repair kit, consumers can visit www.recall.BumboUSA.com (http://www.recall.BumboUSA.com) or call 866-898-4999 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

This may make me sound like a jerk, but it's somewhat unfortunate they're having to do this.

21 cracked skulls (no mention of fatalities) and 84 other injuries - 105 total incidents in 4,000,000 - which means it safe 99.99997% of the time (users are told not to put the chairs on high surfaces, yet 19 of those cracked skulls happened when the chair was placed on a table or other high surface).  I would hazard a guess that the same ratio applies to those "other 84 injuries" as well.

I just don't get this mentality.  If it happened to my daughter, I'd blame myself for not keeping an eye on her, not on the chair for not doing my job (which it wasn't really designed for in the first place).  Instead of taking personal accountability for the incident, they're blaming the chair company.

/end confused rant

I don't think you sound like a jerk, Keet!

I thanked Keith for posting this so everyone knows that they can get the free addition.

But you are right Keet!   I would say that almost all of the accidents are from putting these chairs on high surfaces.  Most people won't read the "rules" for products, even stuff for their kids.  It's sad really, but I guess that parents don't think they need to read rules for chairs.  :)

I agree Keet. Where is the accountability of the parent in this. It's amazing that we as a race have survived. Thank god for that 99.99% of people with smarts enough not to leave a child in a carrier unattended, or for that matter place a carrier where it will fall. Shoot my parenting protective circuits still jangle when I am in places where I see the parent let there kids do stupid things or place the kid in danger out of stupidity at worst and inattentiveness at best. I can't count the number of times I have seen a little one stand up in a grocery basket and teeter on the edge of disaster with the parent standing right there ignoring them, or worse yet seeing them do it, but then ignoring them and going back to texting on their damn phone. It's too bad kids have to get hurt due to natural Darwinism... it's a good thing and sometimes a not so good thing that there is God looking over these little ones in situations like this, because if there weren't the numbers would be more like 80% kids lucking out and 20% kids taking the bullet for their parents.  B)

That's what a lot of people think now-a-days!  I can't stand that!
