Title: What do you teach your kids?
Post by: Keith on December 26, 2012, 07:56:51 PM
Another simple yet useful question to dads. What do you teach your kids?
You know, to teach them to be better kids and adults?  What's the one thing that you try to instill in them everyday.

There are many little reminders throughout the day, depending on what we're doing.

When learning, you practice until you get it right.  To win, you practice until you never get it wrong.  She's taken that to heart with her soccer, and we practice as often as we can.  It's not as easy to get it to transfer to homework because...well...it's homework.

People will say and to stupid things to try to hurt us, but nothing matters except how we treat those around us.

"Can you move it?  Is it bleeding?  Can you walk on it?  Then rub some dirt on it and get back out there, your team needs you more than you need to worry about some pain that is not permanent"

I'm sure there are many more, just a little brain dead this morning

Daily, I try to instill in all my children several principles:

1 - YOU can be amazing to at least one individual per day.

2 - WE always help "the weaker" (example - people being bullied, etc)

3 - Harm nobody (physical/mental)

Basically, people (children ESPECIALLY) are what you tell them they are.  Every morning my children (and, my team at work) hear me say: "Let's go be amazing."

Sooner or later, everybody starts to believe they are amazing - and, with that, people WILL surprise you as to what kind of spectacular stuff they can do.

First and foremost, RESPECT.. Other kids, teachers, adults..ETC. Don't be a bully and don't let yourself get bullied. Do everything you can to not get into a fight. However if you absolutely have to, make sure you lock your wrists and keep your thumb outside of your fingers. When I was in grade 7 I was the bully and this guy Dave called me out. He threw 40 punches inside of 20 seconds. Not one of them missing my face lol. If I ran into him today I would shake his hand for teaching me a lesson.

Respect is a great one.  Always telling the kids to respect others and themselves.  be Polite.  pleases and thank yous go a long way with people.
Never say "I can't".  Because if you try you can.  I go through this a lot with my son who isn't very confident physically.  Mentally he is unbelievably smart.  But get him on a bike and he doesn't want to try.  He's taking karate now to try and instill some confidence.  So I work with him when he says I can't do that.  I tell him you can and eventually he does.  the smile is worth it.
