Title: DaddyPlace DOODS Getting Fit Group!
Post by: Ramblin' Dad on October 16, 2008, 12:35:16 PM
Welcome to our new Getting Fit Group. I am really looking forward to this. This thread will be our general Getting Fit Group thread to welcome new group members, have the rules for review, ask questions and give support.

DaddyPlace DOODS Get Fit Rules

1. A check in must be posted each Friday in a separate thread (The first person to post starts the thread) z_randy or I will sticky this at the top when we can.

Friday End of the Week Check In Thread (If there is not a new thread on Friday for the week please start one) will include:

Workout Days (Mandatory for Medal): If you workout a day during the week Saturday-Friday post it. Workouts will include but are not limited to Walking, Running, Gym, Treadmill, Swimming, Weights, Martial Arts, etc. Please list the days that you exercised above and beyond what you normally would. Regular work that you do around the house, or work that you do secularly, shouldn't count (unless it is something that you normally do not do). We are looking to encourage one another to work out more than we normally would, after all, it is our current situation that is a result of the work we currently do, so we all need some extra attention to exercise.

Weight Lost (Not Required for Medal): If you lost weight during the week Saturday-Friday post it. We don't need to know your current or starting weight (unless you want to share), just post a + or - and number of pounds gained or lost. If you stayed the same, just put a zero.

Distance (Not Required for Medal): Run, Swim, Walk, bike, or any other mode that has a measurable distance during the week Saturday-Friday. Post it.

A typical post on Friday might look like this:

RamblinDad
-1 lbs for the week
Worked out: M,Th, F, Su
Walked 12 miles on treadmill

See, it doesn't have to be anything complicated. You can abbreviate as you wish, and you're welcome to tell the story of your week as well in your post. Let us know what you had to overcome, what you liked, something that worked for you, or whatever you like.

2. Everyone starts with a black medal in their signature for being part of this group. You stay in this group, and advance in medals, not with weight loss, but with exercise. We want to know that you are working to get fit. Of course, losing weight should come with it, but even those that are their ideal weight can benefit from exercise. We don't want to discourage anyone from joining that wants to join just because they don't need to lose weight. Some of us do, some don't, but we all need exercise regardless.

So, if you fail to report on Friday or to exercise for 2 consecutive weeks you are still welcome to work with us, but your medal will go back to the black medal. If you can't post on Friday because you are out of town, or just forget, just post sometime during the week and I'll look for it, but try to post on Fridays to make it easier on me to keep track. We hope to encourage one another to be persistent, even if just one day a week, and to report so as to encourage others.

Medals, based on you reporting exercise on Fridays, will go as follows (Copy and Paste the associated codes into your signature):
First 2 weeks = Black

We’ll work on something really special for a year, but let's start here to kick things off.

The code also has a link to this thread to encourage others to come see what we're doing and maybe they will join in too.

Join other DP Dads in getting fit!

3. This isn't a rule, but encourage others that you may know to participate. A person can join at any time they like. A person is also welcome to leave at anytime they like, and will go back to a black medal if they decide to join in again. Together we can help others to make an improvement in their health, both physically and mentally.

You are more than welcom! Just copy and paste the code above in your sig. This will give you the black medal. At the end of the week a new check in thread will be posted, where only the weeks check ins will be. Do it to it for two weeks with check ins and I or Randy will PM a new code for the next medal.

If you want, you can post here each day you work out. This is the general thread for that too.

maybe everyone could - if they want - mention what they're working on. For example, I've dropped a lot of weight lately with my job change. At my old job, I had plenty of time to nibble on whatever during the day, but I'm pretty much down to 3 meals (maybe - breakfast usually gets skipped) and some sort of snack in the afternoon. What I want to work on is getting in shape cardio-wise, building strength, etc.

Sweet! It looks like we are seven so far!   :excited:

Here are the members of our little group so far:

If you have not got your medal in your sig yet go ahead and copy the code from the rules and paste it in. If you need help with that post here and let us know.

There is a separate thread that I just made for our first week Friday check in here: http://www.daddyplace.com/index.php/topic,9782.new.html#new (http://www.daddyplace.com/index.php/topic,9782.new.html#new)

That would be great and what this is about. Getting fit. We track workouts, but are more than interested in what we all are doing as we workout and get fit.

The first week is over and I have only heard from z_randy and rcpilot. If you worked out last week and didn't post in the check in thread, PM me and let me know and I will update our numbers. If you didn't get any work outs in because we just started no biggie, just remember you need to have two weeks in a row of workouts to move up to the next medal. This will take some getting used to. When we get up to speed look out!

So far we have a good start:

I will post results as they come.

After speaking with Randy that this isn't just a group to lose weight, which I don't need to do, I'd like to join. I've been wanting to build up some muscle, get muscle tone, etc on my skinny ass body. So I'm hoping this will help and from my understanding we have a few other dad's here for that as well. I'll see who they are and go from there for advice, etc. But yeah, i'm in. Thanks for the info Randy

Don't want to waste a thread on this but I was thinking of getting something I had while growing up that I used all the time. Just wondering if it'd help at all with what I want to accomplish, and that's upper body strength, muscle, etc.

A pullup bar that goes across a door frame.

Pat,
That is a great idea, I have always had one.  Its a good for me to get a workout in if I cant make it to the gym that day. Push ups, dips with my chair, sit ups and as many pull ups as I can do until I feel like my eyes are going to pop out.

I have struggled with weight off and on for years. I went to the doctor about 6 weeks ago and had an eye opener. I have type 1 diabetes that I was diagnosed with 4.5 years ago. My average blood sugar was horrible, blood pressure was high, you name it. I also have started to have nerve loss. That really scared me. I finally decided enough was enough. I started watching everything I ate and started going to the gym. I have now lost 25 pounds, and have 55 pounds more to go. The doctor will reevaluate my weight at time to see if I could go a little more. According to the BMI I should be down to about 175 pounds, but doctor said 200 should be fine.

I want to be around for my kids, so I finally got serious. It has been diificult, but I am finally motivate enought to do it. How does everyone else stay motivated?

Hey Mike congrats on the weight loss!  We here in the getting fit group kind of encourage and push each other.  It has helped me a great deal.  That and the goal I set for myself. Was tired of feeling blah all the time.  We have a check in every friday where we tell what we have done for the week and if we have lost any weight. Some of us aren't looking to lose just get in shape.  Join in this friday.  Welcome to the group!

I can't get motivated, I've been slacking on excerise for the past couple of years and its starting to show. I have my own Bowflex and heavy bag down cellar that just collect dust, after a long day of work the last thing I have the motivation to do is lift or work out. I blame World of Warcraft and XBL for this laziness...lol. If they weren't so damn fun I'd have ambition to do the annoying things in life. Curious about how others have dealt with a rut like this.

I think it is a mental thing.  For me when I start feeling that way I tell myself that is exactly the time I need to be doing it.  Once you get yourself into a routine it will be easier and easier to do.  It's the getting started that is the hard part

To the new guys wanting to join us :)

Every Friday, we post a thread in which each of puts our stuff (i.e., what exercise we did, how long, did we lose/gain weight, etc).

As well, if you want to join www.mapmyrun.com (http://www.mapmyrun.com), we have a DaddyPlace group over there were you can use their training log for free - and it'll post up over there -- and, we can see how well we're doing as a group.

For the badge for the signature, I had to have somebody put it in for me ... LOL
