New member of the family...
« on: April 02, 2009, 10:12:33 AM »
We're getting a new member to the family Saturday... a female English Mastiff. She's 5 weeks old as of yesterday. We're naming her Kaiah, a native American word meaning rare beauty.

Mastiffs are great with kids - my wife grew up with a St. Bernard first and then a Mastiff and her parents basically used them as free babysitters haha. Great addition to the family!

That's one of the biggest factors in us getting her is that they're great with kids. That, and we're getting her for half of the cost.

How tall can they get?  Don't they weigh over 150 fully grown?

I am serious and don't call me surely.

At the shoulder, around 3' tall. Normal weight is around 150. However, this one's mother has a true English bloodline (she actually caem from England) and weighs around 180 right now, and she hasn't reached her full mature weight yet. She's expected to get close to 250, if not more. The guy we're getting Kaiah from thinks she'll reach a mature weight of 200+.

 :whoa:200+.  That's a lot of dog food.

I which I could have a big dog, but my house is too small.

Surprisingly, no. About 20 lbs a week. They're not a high-energy dog, so they don't burn the food so fast. They lay around a LOT, so you don't need a large yard, either.

My Beagle goes through about 15 pounds every two months.

Is a Mastiff bigger than a Great Dane?
