RIP Yoda
« on: April 14, 2009, 05:27:27 PM »
One of our cats, Yoda, died suddenly last night. He was 3 years old and would have turned 4 next month. He had been sick for a few days and we had an appointment to take him to the vet this morning, but he went downhill very fast last night and died as we tried to get him to the car and to the emergency vet.

Wife and I were very upset, thankfully our daughter is way too young to comprehend any of this.

Sorry to hear that Matt. Way too young to pass, especially for a cat whose normal life span is 12-20 years at most

Sorry Matt.  Been down that pet road (early age death) more times than anyone should.  I know how your feel.  Stay strong.

Sorry to hear Matt.    Since the cat went down that fast, kinda sounds like feline leukemia to me, but I'm not vet.  I do know that it is VERY contagious to other cats.

no, it definitely wasn't that - I had a cat that died of that when I was a kid though and yeah, it's really contagious. Yoda had surgery a few months back for bladder/kidney stones, and he started having the symptoms again. We relocated him to the garage so he could have a private litter box until we could get him into the vet. Unfortunately, either a stone damaged one of his organs and caused internal bleeding, or too much urine was retained in his system and poisoned him, and that caused the problems that ended up killing him. Because of how fast it happened - he literally was doing "as well as could be expected" earlier in the afternoon when I started a load of laundry but was vomiting up the nasty stuff before the clothes were out of the dryer, the vet said he believes it was internal bleeding caused by a stone, and that by the time we found him (and since he seemed to be doing fine, if I wasn't doing laundry, we probably wouldn't have checked on him for another hour or so) vomiting, it was already too late.

We felt and still feel really bad, like there was more we could or should have done, and my wife is still really upset, because Yoda wasn't much of a people person, but he really liked her, and her being upset makes me upset, but we're doing ok. All the kind posts and comments are definitely helpful guys, and it's nice to have other pet lovers who know how crappy this part of ownership is
