A Song of Ice and Fire
« on: June 17, 2009, 08:54:14 AM »
I can't believe nobody here has posted about George R.R. Martin's series.  This is far and away one of the best book series I've ever read.  The books are similar to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series in scope but without all the florid descriptive narration Jordan uses to paint the background scenes.
The first book is called A Game of Thrones, which is followed by A Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords.  The latest book is A Feast for Crows.  Ok,  here is the downside...due to all the other stuff Martin is involved in, he takes FOREVER to write each new book.  I've been waiting 3 years for the next book to come out and he still hasn't announced its completion.
The books are massive in size and are a must read for any fantasy fan.

Did you know that HBO has purchased the rights from Martin to produce the TV series?  Last I heard they were pushing for each season being a book.  But that was a while ago.  Should google it if you hadn't heard.

Actually yes I had heard about that.  That is one of the many things he has going that is probably delaying the book.  I know he also just finished a deal to have two video games made from the series.  One is going to be an RTS and the other will be an RPG.

Nice!  I'm sure you'll enjoy it.  But, be warned you're gonna be ticked off like me waiting for the next one to come out.  He takes a LONG time to write them because they are so huge.  That, and as I said before, he has so many irons in the fire.

This is probably the best Fantasy series ever written. I love these books and reread them at least once a year. My biggest fear is that Martin will keel over dead before he finishes the story. Two to three years per book is a killer.

I read books pretty fast, but I'm still on the first book of this series trying to get through it.  It hasn't got me hooked yet.

Just finished the 1st book.  Yeah it started getting good about 1/2 way through and got to the point where it was hard to put it down the last 1/4.  I'll be starting the second book once I finish the latest Ranger's Apprentice (book 8, I think) book.
This is one of the few books i've read where I was getting pissed.  Those Lannisters need to be wiped the **ck out.  And some of those people you just want to slap.  I'm actually hoping Tyrion (The Imp) stabs his family in the back though, I kinda like him and hope he makes it.  The issue with Joffery and Arya I was like WTF, if your raising a king you don't let him behave that way.  That family is all **cked up.
Finished book one and am about halfway through book 2. real hard to keep going. I might have to force myself through the rest of it. Great series but this book has hit a dry spot for me.

The Imp was my favorite character thru all the books
