The Indie Game Thread
« on: October 14, 2009, 09:51:28 PM »
It is really easy to miss alot of gems among the masses of releases on the Xbox Live Indie Game section.  So if you come across a good game, be sure to list it here.

I MA3D A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB13S!!1 - The start of it all.  It only costs a buck.  I think we have all talked about it here.  Done by the same programmer who brought us The Dish Washer, this dual stick shooter features a hilarious, one of kind/only song soundtrack w/ decent graphics and addictive gameplay.  Oh yeah, did I mention it costs just one dollar.

Avatar Drop - This game is only a buck and very high up on the top played Indie Games.  It is basically a simple game of just dropping your avatar and trying to steer him/her through hoops to gain points before reaching the bottom.  I passed personally but many may like.

Avatar Golf - Here is your chance to play golf using your avatar you created.  It is also Xbox LIVE compatible for 4 players so you can finally show off that fanzy, expensive Jedi armor.  This game comes with 6 courses I believe it was, and a golf course creator tool.  It is $5 however, but fun nonetheless.

Fishing Girl -This game is simple.  Three kinds of fish, 6 kinds of bait, and three poles.  You can beat it over the time of the demo, so decide then if it is a purchase or not for you.  Both of my kids love this game, and I enjoy it as well.  A and B buttons is all you use and this game is also the bargin price of just $1.

Groov - This is the latest gem that I've discovered.  Perfect dual stick shooter for any who love the Geometry War games.  It is very similiar, but with an addictive and original soundtrack.  You actually control the tempo of the piano with each of your shots, and when the beat picks up, so does the game.  A steal at just $1.

Headshot - All you have is the scope on your gun to look through over balloon head characters.  Wait for the click of the gun, and then it's a scramble to find who and where is the character with the gun.  Find him and get a headshot before he shoots and kills an innocent.  Only a buck.

Miner Dig Deep - It reminds me alot of Dig Dug, but in more detail.  You can save and go back down.  You have to keep your latern full of gas and you can build with ladders and elevators.  I think this was $3 or $2.50, but I can't say for sure b/c I already bought it so all it says for me is "download again".

Arkedo Series - 01 Jump - A well done game where you have to jump to solve puzzles.  Will take you back to the dasy of Atari 2600, but with HD graphics. A well done game, and costs $3.

ZP2K9 - A very fun shooter and multiplayer game.  I never purchased though b/c you play against bots if you don't have four friends to play against.  I enjoyed this game more than Small Arms for the Arcade, and this game is only $2.50.  Cool weapons, easy gameplay, it's worth a try on the demo.

Played a few other good ones.

HeadShot 2 - Expands on the first game so you have to find a specific character quickly and get a headshot.  Only a dollar and very worth it imo.

Christmas Trivia - A great collection of Christmas trivia multiple choices w/ your avatar on the screen at the bottom.  Only a dollar and great for a family night of Christmas trivia.  No difficulty selection so best w/ older children and family as there are some tough questions.   Only 1 dollar.

Scare Me - Where was this game for Halloween?  You can create different effect sounds w/ pictures or even set it to button presses.  The best though is the preset sequence of "who paused this game?" set to a button press and perfect to scare the sh** out of the misses, or the game to play called "I MA3D A GAM3 W/O Z0MB13S 1N 1T!!1".  Great fun and perfect for next year at Halloween.  Only 1 dollar.

Boom!! Chick, Chick - a single stick shooter that is pretty basic.  Nothing special, but can be enjoyable pushing yourself to see how far you can get.  Gameplay is well done.  Only 1 dollar.

Solar - You are a star like our sun and you go around finding other chunks of rock that can be planets and have them absorb smaller asteroids to become bigger.  Fun gameplay and original.  This game is 3 dollars.

I got the lacrosse game.  I used to love lacrosse when I was down south.  I was really wanting a good EA type lacrosse game but I guess there isnt enough intrest.  Well someone went and made one.  ITs ok..  Not great.  I actually got frustrated after a little bit... but it is a lacrosse game.  So ... thats basically my review.    Its a lacrosse game that tries to be good.  But its just ok.

Man, I spent more time on Miner Dig Deep than on a lot of retail games.  Great game.

Johnny Platform's Biscuit Romp is a great classic platformer where you try and collect coffee cups and get through the levels.  Some get pretty difficult.

I just bought The Impossible Game.  It's incredibly simple but addicting and relentless.

Border Wars - so when I was in school I used to draw epic flight battles in my notebooks, I guess I'm not alone.  This game is done up in a fashion of being in a notebook w/ a hand drawn aircraft that you can use the default or draw your own.  Side scroller shooter in a R-Type fashion and where you can upgrade your craft w/ points earned in between levels with better guns, shields, etc.  $3 or 240 points.

I played the Soulcaster demo yesterday and it was alot of fun.  Then I came across this article of the top ten indie games.  Some games I put on here, and most games I never even tried, but I just d/l'd the demo of them from this site.  And Soulcaster is the #1 game on here, so I think I'm gonna go back and buy it.

Here's a link to gamasutra's top ten indie games of 2010 so far.  I enjoy these top ten to find good games among the masses.  I recently played Soulcaster and that was a very fun and well done indie game.  It made the top ten.

I found a few more here recently.

Nuclear Wasteland 2030 - 80 points ($1).  Not the greatest game you will play, but it is a FPS w/ decent graphics just pitting you against wave after wave of fallout zombies.  As you get further into the game, you unlock better wpns and access to other rooms w/ med kits.  I mean, it's only a dollar.

Richocet Assassin - 80 points ($1).  Fun game that you just shoot arrows off walls to richocet hit a standing stick figure.  Headshots result in a really cool animation and the head flying w/ the arrow.  Reminds me of worms or the artillary games on computer.

No real names of specific ones, but you can search indie games under education and find a lot of flash card games for just one dollar.  I thought it was really cool and will probably get the math flash cards just to make a bit more fun for my kids, but they even have ones with numbers, colors, and shapes.  I thought that was really cool and great tool.  Plus, like they advertise, you don't have to remember where you keep the flash cards or getting them damaged or anything.

UPDATE: also Mom and Son clean house - 80 points ($1).  Fun co-op game where the son is an ex military guy and shoots all these metal kangaroos from space but has limited ammo and one hit kills him.  The mom has a life meter and has to sweep up the son's shells to get more ammo, and clean up spots on the wall, where the kangaroos blow up, for bonus points.  Pretty cool, addicting game.

i bought a game called "shoot 1up" for a buck, everytime you gather a special icon you gain a ship up to 30 at one time. special power ups, pretty descent graphics, adjustsable settings. Very cool game, my kids like it, my wife likes it, i liked it, it's definitely worth a buck and it plays like an arcade.

Gerbil Physics one and two are both cheap and fun.

Well, here's a list of some of the Indie Games I play and like:

360 Mega App Pack HD
Asylum
Avatar Bowling
Avatar Karate (can be played online)
Avatar Laser Tag (Only have Trial) (can be played online)
Avatar Ninja
Avatar Onslaught
Avatar Paintball (Only Have Trial) (can be played online)
Avatar Racedrome (can be played online)
Avatar Showdown (Only Have Trial) (can be played online)
Baby Maker Extreme (Only have Trial)
Bloody Death (Only Have Trial)
Chaos Gateway (Only have Trial)
Get Rich or Die Gaming (Only have Trial)
Home Run Challenge (Only Have Trial)
Hotel Danger
Super Avatar Hero Force (Only Have Trial)
Super Avatar World (this should be online playable, but it's not)
Zombie Estate (this should be online playable, but it's not)

As you can see, most of them are trials, but I liked the trials and I'm going to buy the full games.  If anyone has any of the same Indie games as me, I'd be happy to play on Xbox Live with you.

I thought I would revive this thread. Have any of you guys got the XBLIG Little Street Racers? It's made by Milk Stone Studios. The game is awesome. It's a top down view racing game with first person controls. It's really addictive. Plus it's only a buck. It has an online component, there are 30 different cars in the game ranging from E class to A class. The challenges make it really worth playing. And again, the game was only 80 points.
