Foot Issue
« on: October 25, 2010, 09:38:05 PM »
I have mentioned to a few of you that I have talked running with about the pain I've been having in the ball of my right foot when I run.  It would start to come on at about 6 miles.  Sometimes it was a dull pain, sometimes a shooting pain into the toes and sometimes some numbness or tingling.  Well with the marathon coming up I figured I better go see a foot doctor.  So I went tonight. (foot held up well during the ATM)
Good news is there are no fractures or anything.  Bad news is I have what is called Morton's Neuroma:

Morton's Neuroma

Basically it's the nerve that runs between the toes, for me it is between the middle toe and the one next to it and the pinky toe.  Dr says it is not uncommon in runners.  Over time the bones rubbing the nerve cause it to swell and it forms some kind of protective layer.  So as I run and the foot gets heated up that is what happens. SUCKS!

So for now, since it doesn't hurt unless I run a long distance he gave me metatarsel pads to put on my insole.  This raises the arch of the foot a little and takes the pressure off the nerve.  This is the first thing to try.  If this doesn't work I could get cortisone shots, next would be some kind of alcohol shot that freezes the nerve, and the final thing would be surgery.
Hoping the pads work!

So if you get this kind of pain this may be your problem.

I have an amazing podiatrist if you're willing to go to Long Island.  The guy doesn't do routine stuff, but handles the kind of problem you're having.    He was the only one that fixed the major pain I had in my foot about five years ago.  He has people come from all over the country to see him.  If you're interested at any point, I'll send you the info.

Stay positive Randy. Hopefully the pads can provide the needed relief.

Did the doc mention if you should change your shoes?

First thing he asked was about the shoes.  I told him I had just been refitted.  Then he said to try and stay on the crown of the road which I do anyway.  I used the pad this morning and the foot didn't hurt but I did 5 miles and it usually doesn't act up until 6-7.  I don't think it will go away but maybe it can be more bearable.  I'll find out Sunday when I do a 20 miler.

Randy, I spoke with my brother who works for a medical publishing company. All of his accounts are in the field of podiatry so I asked him to look into the condition for me. He sent along this information. Hopefully you'll find something useful:

Dang Randy! I hope your foot feels better and that the non-invasive procedures work.
