So now I get to post on this board!

Seems like forever since I've been to DP, though I still stay in touch with a lot of you thru FB, twitter, g+, etc, but there's been some big changes recently, so I'm hoping I can be around here more...

I'm now a SAHD-kinda...a new Florida law requires all school districts to offer a fully-online option for students, so near the end of summertime, our district got their program (for middle and HS) off the ground and I was hired to teach the middle school social studies courses (World Cultures, World Geography, US History). We're in the 4th week of classes and things are going good so far. I work from home, and get to set my hours - between 8am and 8pm, I work a combined 7.5 hours.

Since I'm working, my daughter (she'll be 4 in December) is still going to daycare, but we both get to sleep in a little bit later, which I think is good for her, and I KNOW is good for me :)

One of the biggest benefits I've seen so far is financially - we were nervous about this year since the Governor also passed thru legislation requiring us to contribute 3% of our income towards retirement, and then our district imposed another paycut, equaliing out to another 3% - but I haven't had to buy gas in going on 4 weeks now (as opposed to putting in about 10 gallons/$35 a week) and not making my multiple-times-a-week stop at 7-11 for snacks/drinks and buying lunch, etc at school.

Now if I can just get an exercise program going, this could be a great year!

Great to see you back man!

So students get to stay home and do their school work online?   Is this a "try out" thing or is it going nationwide. I would be all for this for my children!

There is that option, and that's what most of my students now are doing, but they can also do this if they need to make up course credit, take other courses needed for graduation, etc. Our district has partnered with Florida Virtual School, which has been around for awhile now, to offer the program. I grade their assignments, talk to them and their parents at least once a month (but more often in reality, I talk to at least one student a day on the phone), etc. All Florida HS students have to take at least one online class before graduating HS, so it's definitely something that's here to stay.

I think I want my daughter to still go to a physical elementary school, but I could see her doing virtual for middle/high school. It's no cost to the students/parents and curriculum is approved by the state DOE...

Great to have you back, Big.

Sounds like a great program.  I'd love to see more of that.
