Yes, you can.  Reserve from redbox.com.  That way you know what your local Redbox has before you go there.

It's really easy once you have an account set up.  You rent it from the website, go to the kiosk, click pick up rental.  Slide your card and out comes your game.  2 minutes total.

There is a game that I think would be great for play dates. It's an Indie game though, Little Street Racers. This game is so much fun and totally addictive. Another great thing, it's only $1 (80 MS Points). I'll even be kind enough to add the link for xbox.com so that you can purchase it yourselves. You're all welcome.
