Walking the other Running
« on: August 28, 2012, 01:31:46 AM »
I figured if pork was the other white meat, then walking was the other running. I know it's a bad analogy, but work with me here.  ~o)

I registered Jeremy and I for the Reno Gazette Journal, "Journal Jog" (8k) as a father/son team in the walking category. I don't do the run thing. Seismologists thank me for this.  :laugh2:

Peggy and I did this several years ago and it was fun. I thought it would be a good starting goal for me and my journey back to good health. Jeremy is just excited about doing it with dad, which gives me a warm fuzzy.  :)*

That's awesome!  When is it?
Do you do the whole 8K together or is it like a relay?

It is the 16th of September and we do the whole 8k together.  :righton:

That's coming up pretty fast. I can already do 2 miles easy, but this is for all intents 5 miles. Jeremy and I are starting to extend our walk around the marina. It's a two mile loop, so we are starting to lap it twice. I hope to have that getting so it is easy, too before the 8k, so that five miles may be a little rough, but not rough.

That is a great idea!  Anything that can help you stay healthy and involve your children is a good idea to me.   Good luck on the walk.

I'm sure that John will agree with me.  I know that I walk at least 4 to 5 miles a day everyday that I work.  As a machinist, I work through out the building.  I'm always walking from one area to another to get my jobs done.

The Journal Jog (8K) was a blast! I feel good about how I did considering the weight I am carrying and trying to lose. We averaged 20 min miles and finished 106th and 107th of 126. My time was 1:28:24 and Jeremy's was right with me at 1:28:29.

There was even one point where I noticed we dropped back a little too much for where I set my goal of the 20min/mile, so I stretched out my stride a little and started eating some distance leaving Jeremy behind a bit. He upped his pace to match and huffed at me, "hey dad, I'm the one supposed to be pushing you!"  :laugh2:

See below for some pics.

Next up is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. It's a 5K walk with a bunch of friends, so not really a competition, but it will be a lot  of fun, raise some money for Breast Cancer Research, and it still is getting out and moving.

Another 5K done! This one we walked so fast we got a negative time!  ~o)

We started at 1:50AM and finished at 1:39AMish. Our times were -11:12 and -11:10!

It was a lot of fun. Jeremy and I got to do the walking tour of the University of Nevada Reno campus by dark.  :)* The course was marked by flashing lights placed in strategic places. There were some crazy people there too. In costume and covered in lights. Jeremy and I had lights to, but man were we tame! See our pics below.
