MagicJack - Good or Bad
« on: September 19, 2012, 08:27:39 PM »
Does anyone here use or have used the MagicJack home phone service?

My wife and I are looking at new ways to save money and I'm always hearing about magicjack.  Most reviews I have looked at are positive, however today I searched for bad reviews and there are several pages of those as well.

I know that there are probably good and bad points to the service but for $20 a year I think I can handle it.   What are your thoughts on magicjack?

Right now they will send you a unit that you can use for a month to try before you buy.  I want to transfer my existing number but I don't want to do it until I try the service.

They have a new adapter now where you don't have to plug it into your computer.   You plug it into a power outlet and then plug your Ethernet cable and phone cable into it and then your done.

Anyway, I'm hoping some of you use or have used the service so I can hear your thoughts on it.

I used it this last time in Iraq and had no issues with it.  Bare in mind, mine was hooked to a computer.  The only issues I had was kids making noise in the background, which was not an issue  :)*

I would say go for it.  One year with it, no issues.  When my time was set to expire they offered me some insane deal (similar to like 4 or 5 years for $40).  If it worked fro iraq to texas no issue than you should be fine. That's just my $.02

Thanks Keith.   I am really leaning towards getting it.   The only bad thing I have read about it is from people that don't have good high speed internet.   I have cable so I believe I should be ok with it.
Thanks for the info!

my internet was not real high speed and it worked fine.  Even if it does not work for you, it is only $20.  Much less than a month you are paying now I am sure.

Definitely let us know. I have thought about it too, but never went through with it, so it will be good to hear more first hand reports from people I know, like you and Keith E.

If your router has QoS ability, you might want to play around with that if you wind up having internet performance issues resulting from using this service.

I will keep that in mind Mitch.   I have vonage now and I have never had problems with that service.   From what I gather, vonage and magicjack are pretty much the same except except magicjack has no number to call and no customer service.   I can handle that if I can save over $500 a year by switching to their service.

wow.... $500 a year sounds like a lot for a home phone. Let me know if it works I will probably go that route too.....

The other good thing is you will get to pick from available local numbers, so you do not get some off the wall area code.
