The 5 Best Firearms for Self-Defense
« on: August 22, 2014, 06:35:51 PM »
When you first load a website like GrabAGun (grabagun.com), you're immediately shown hundreds of different guns across more than a dozen categories. While this variety is useful and even desirable, it can also be completely overwhelming for the first-time gun owner who just wants a weapon for self-defense. Here are five light, uncomplicated models that will take some of the dizziness out of your search.

1: Glock 21 .45 ACP

One of the most popular guns for self-defense, Glocks are very simple and straightforward, making them the perfect firearm for people who are just worried about pointing and shooting when an intruder breaks into their home. Glocks are also quite powerful despite their small size, so you're paying for performance as well as convenience.

2: Smith & Wesson 686 .357

Sturdy and strong, Smith & Wesson guns have long been a favorite of police officers across the country. They've also gained prominence in recent years among beginning gun enthusiasts because of their easiness to use. They're revolvers where the bullets are loaded directly into the chamber, so you won't have to worry about clips, magazines and other aspects of intermediate gun handling.

3: Browning Hill-Power 1911 0.45 ACP

If the name sounds familiar, that's probably because you already know it even if you've never held one of its kind. Browning guns have been around for more than 100 years, and they were so in demand in the early 1900s that the U.S. military actually bought their rights and started supplying them exclusively to soldiers. Millions of professional shooters can't be wrong!

4: Bond Arms Derringer Model 95

Derringers are known in the gun world as "pocket pistols" due to their small size and single or double barrels. Their simplicity, however, is their greatest strength when it comes to self-defense weapons. You won't have time to fumble with parts and components when an emergency is unfolding right before your eyes. You'll need a quick, efficient handgun that can be aimed without hesitation, and that's where the Derringer shines.

5: Springfield XD9

If you're still a little nervous about owning a gun, the Springfield can set your mind at ease. Not only is it simple to use, but it also comes with advanced safety features like a textured grip so your hold will always be comfortable and correct. When high-powered guns are too intimating to imagine in your closet, consider buying a Springfield instead. It won't let you down.

What are your thoughts on the CZ handguns (if you've ever owned one)?

I own one and haven't actually had a chance to use it on a range yet, but from all reviews online, I went with a CZ. They seem to be reliable, and of high quality. Check out reviews of the 75B if you get some free time. It's very ergonomic, in my opinion but i's all dependent on the person, I suppose!

That's very true.   I will look it up.  You should post some pics of it when you get time.

I'm impressed with the ergonomics of it and the build quality. I haven't gotten a chance to try it out yet - plans to go to a range have been pushed back, but judging on Youtube reviews I've seen, I'm expecting an accurate shot without much recoil (due to the heavier weight).

Sorry you haven't been able to try it out yet.   I know your excited to try it.   I know I would be.   Living in the country here I'm lucky.  I can just go right outside and shoot all I want.

After you try it you have got to tell us how it goes.
