Now that the holidays are over...
« on: December 26, 2006, 10:19:29 AM »
I was wondering how you guys handled buying gifts for the wife?  Ask for an allowance?  Credit card?  The way we work our budget I get X amount of dollars deposited into an account every week.  I have to buy gas, food etc with this money.  What I've been doing is skimming some off the day before my "payday" and putting it in an envelope in my drawer.  It kind of made me feel like it was "my" money.  If I did my job well and managed the household expenses that week there'd be some left over.  At least it works for me.

Where I live they have what is called a Christmas bureau. What this is is a group of people in town get together and take donations for Christmas gifts for families that can not afford it. So you sign up there and they give you gifts for your kids one for yourself and one for your partner and they give you some food (turkey) This makes Xmas a little easier on families.

Yeah, I just used the bank card and went out and bought her gift.  Starting the second of January I start a full-time job again because my wife is off on Mat leave for a year.  Btw I love Canada for the year of paid mat. leave.

Lol, sometimes work is a nice break away from the house and kids though. I have been at home now for about 3 or 4 months. The job I was at closed it's doors and I find it a bit boring siting at home all day.

Keith if you gave birth to a kid here in the states you'd never have to work.  Think of the book deals!  You'd be on Oprah and everything.

The way that it works is that the mother gets 30 weeks of actual Maternity Leave, you then have parental leave which either the mother or the father can take for the next 22 weeks, or if you so choose, you can not use the secondary 22 weeks.  I do believe that this is one area where Canada is in the top 5 in the world.
