I like the guy. Even moreso given the alternative. Ouch.

so true

when bush was elected i was disappointed

when he was reelected i was embarrassed to be an American

maybe obama's inexperienced, but i'll take optimistic enthusiasm over the GOP any day

at least if the democrats are going to spend my money it will be on something benefiting me, rather than themselves in the form of tax cuts for the rich while raising taxes for the middle class and ignoring the poor.

i'm proudly voting obama but, as i'm in California, it will be an easy obama state win anyway.

Yeah, funny because it's true.

Isn't it nice to see images from abroad with people raising American flags in excitement, instead of burning them in disgust?

yeah because they know Obama is going to sell out the US, raise the taxes of the middle class, I'll make more on welfare than working, ship our money off to Africa by the boatloads, and thats in his first 10 days.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I would rather die on my feet then on my knees

What are you on about? Sounds like a lot of conspiracy garbage to me.
Obama's Blue Book states he'll cut income tax by $1000 for working families.
On the world stage, Obama is respected. McCain, is he even on the radar as a world leader? That's important, since your foreign policy has been such a mess for so many years.
I think it'd be a hell of a lot worse to vote a guy in who can barely remember his name, or that Canada is a country, or there's no Iraq-Pakistan border, or has his interviews spliced by CBS because his answer is wrong.
More than likely, something is going to be raised anyway to pay for the war(s) in the Middle East.
The next president has a massive mess to clean up. I don't think McCain can do it.

Sure it's nice to see people excited about the US. But what does someone in Germany waving a flag for him mean to me?  How does that affect my taxes?
Again he gives a good speech.  I still would like to know what he means by "change".  I'm all for change. Just what change?  I'm not discounting him just want to know what he stands for.

Man I keep hearing George Bush this, George Bush that, guess what George Bush isnt running for president

The economy has went down starting 7 or 8 years ago, lets do the math 2008-7=2001, what happened in 2001? 9/11, Middle East and Muslims, HHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM.

Helping main street? Dont know about yall but I have traveled a good bit and most places its not middle class families or "wealthy" living on main street.

Predatory loans, I'm making 6 bucks an hour and I bought a 200,000 house, I now need government oversite because I'm a dumbass? What happened to common sense, think were getting screwed now, wait til the government has to tell us EVERYTHING to do.

McCain believes in Bush's financial plans? Obama believed in a racist bigot preacher that was going to be his spiritual advisor as president until the heat was turned up. Oh wait he left that church so 20 years of amening that crap cant be brought up anymore.

Nice booklet, health care for all? Who will pay for that, wow thats right the taxpayers. Obama's going to make health care affordable to all? How can that happen in a free market economy and a "democracy", maybe in a dictatorship or socialist state.

Five star rating for credit cards? If your too stupid to realize how much interest they are charging you, you shouldn't have a credit card to begin with, if you cant do the basic math how will you realize how much credit you have left?

Raise the minimum wage? Great unskilled labor will move up in pay scale for no reason

from his booklet
Encourage States to Adopt Paid Leave: As president, Obama will initiate a strategy to encourage all 50 states
to adopt paid-leave systems. Obama will provide a $1.5 billion fund to assist states with start-up costs and to
help states offset the costs for employees and employers.

Where will he get this fund?

Housing: In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for
mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current
subprime crisis began.

Didnt help me none

Predatory Lending: In the Illinois State Senate, Obama called attention to predatory lending
issues. Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also urged the
state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices

more government babysitting for the asshats

Reduce Carbon Emissions 80 Percent by 2050
Cap and Trade: Obama supports implementation of a market-based cap-and-trade system to reduce carbon
emissions by the amount scientists say is necessary: 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Obama’s capand-
trade system will require all pollution credits to be auctioned. A 100 percent auction ensures that all
polluters pay for every ton of emissions they release, rather than giving these emission rights away to coal
and oil companies. Some of the revenue generated by auctioning allowances will be used to support the
development of clean energy, to invest in energy efficiency improvements, and to address transition costs,
including helping American workers affected by this economic transition.

Wow trying to control the enviroment, like it doesnt change, anyone remember how hot it was when the dinosaurs were here? Oh yeah and the few ice ages? Did our automobiles and plants bring us out the last Ice Age or was it all the Mammoth farts?

Invest in a Skilled Clean Technologies Workforce
Obama will use proceeds from the cap-and-trade auction program to invest in job training and transition
programs to help workers and industries adapt to clean technology development and production. Obama
will also create an energy-focused Green Jobs Corps to connect disconnected and disadvantaged youth with
job skills for a high-growth industry.
Convert our Manufacturing Centers into Clean Technology Leaders
Obama will establish a federal investment program to help manufacturing centers modernize and Americans
learn the new skills they need to produce green products.
Clean Technologies Deployment Venture Capital Fund
Obama will create a Clean Technologies Venture Capital Fund to fill a critical gap in U.S. technology
development. Obama will invest $10 billion per year into this fund for five years. The fund will partner
with existing investment funds and our National Laboratories to ensure that promising technologies move
beyond the lab and are commercialized in the U.S.

For all the tax cuts he claims he will give hes spending alot of money here

Expand High-Quality Afterschool Opportunities
Obama will double funding for the main federal support for afterschool programs, the 21st Century Learning
Centers program, to serve one million more children.

Lets spend some more money

Expand the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit
Obama will reform the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit by making it refundable and allowing lowincome
families to receive up to a 50 percent credit for their child care expenses. Coupled with Obama’s
“Making Work Pay” tax credit, this proposal will help put more money directly in the pockets of hardworking
low and middle-income parents.

Wow more credits even though we are spending more on government programs

Paid Sick Days
Obama will require that employers provide seven paid sick days per year to their employees.

How? If I own my own business I can do what the hell I want

Encourage States to Adopt Paid Leave
Obama will initiate a strategy to encourage all 50 states to adopt paid-leave systems. Obama will provide a
$1.5 billion fund to help states jump-start paid-leave programs consistent with their local needs.

Woot more spending

Reducing Unintended Pregnancy
Obama will work to reduce unintended pregnancy by guaranteeing equity in contraceptive coverage, providing
sex education, and offering rape victims accurate information about emergency contraception.

All women will have "Obama is watching" embrodried on their panties

Comprehensive Reform
Barack Obama has fought for comprehensive immigration reform that secures our border, fixes our broken
immigration bureaucracy and puts the 12 million undocumented immigrants on a responsible path to
citizenship.

Thats all we need

Bring People Out of the Shadows
Obama supports a system that allows undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine,
learn English, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.

Bet good money if they really wanted it they would have learned English already

Expand Access to Jobs
Help Americans Grab a Hold of and Climb the Job Ladder: Obama will invest $1 billion over five years
in transitional jobs and career pathway programs that implement proven methods of helping low-income
Americans succeed in the workforce.
Create a Green Jobs Corps: Obama will create a program to directly engage disadvantaged youth in energy
efficiency opportunities to strengthen their communities, while also providing them with practical skills in
this important high-growth career field.
Improve Transportation Access to Jobs: As president, Obama will work to ensure that low-income Americans
have transportation to their jobs. Obama will double the federal Jobs Access and Reverse Commute
program to ensure that additional federal public transportation dollars flow to the highest-need communities
and that urban planning initiatives take this aspect of transportation policy into account.
Reduce Crime Recidivism by Providing Ex-Offender Supports: Obama will work to ensure that ex-offenders
have access to job training, substance abuse and mental health counseling, and employment opportunities.
Obama will also create a prison-to-work incentive program and reduce barriers to employment.

Wow more magical money and my favorite at the end, lets make sure the crack dealer wants to work at McDonald's instead of selling crack when he gets out

Make Work Pay for All Americans
Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit: Obama will increase the number of working parents eligible for
EITC benefits, increase the benefits available to parents who support their children through child support
payments, increase benefits for families with three or more children, and reduce the EITC marriage penalty,
which hurts low-income families.
Create a Living Wage: Obama will raise the minimum wage and index it to inflation to make sure that fulltime
workers can earn a living wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs such as
food, transportation, and housing.
Provide Tax Relief: Obama will provide all low and middle-income workers a $500 Making Work Pay tax
credit to offset the payroll tax those workers pay in every paycheck. Obama will also eliminate taxes for
seniors making under $50,000 per year.

Real big with the welfare people here

Support Parents with Young Children: Obama will expand the highly-successful Nurse-Family Partnership
to all 570,000 low-income, first-time mothers each year. The Nurse-Family Partnership provides home visits
by trained registered nurses to low-income expectant mothers and their families.

More middle class tax dollars at waste

Fully Fund the Community Development Block Grant: Obama will fully fund the Community Development
Block Grant program and engage urban leaders across the country to increase resources to the highest-need
Americans

insert "not us"

Establish 20 Promise Neighborhoods: Obama will create 20 Promise Neighborhoods in cities across the
nation that have high levels of poverty and crime and low levels of student academic achievement. The
Promise Neighborhoods will be modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone, which provides a full network of
services, including early childhood education, youth violence prevention efforts and after-school activities, to
an entire neighborhood from birth to college.

Big Brother is watching?

OBAMA’S RECORD
Tax Relief for Low-Income Working Families
Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully
sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax
relief over three years.
Housing
In the Illinois State Senate, Obama championed multiple pieces of legislation to help low-income families
find adequate affordable housing.

reinsert "sit on your ass make money and get a place to live" compliments of those that really work

BARACK OBAMA’s Plan
Enable All Americans to Serve to Meet the Nation’s Challenges
Expand Corporation for National and Community Service: Obama will expand AmeriCorps from 75,000
slots today to 250,000 and he will focus this expansion on addressing the great challenges facing the nation.
He will establish a Classroom Corps to help teachers and students, with a priority placed on underserved
schools; a Health Corps to improve public health outreach; a Clean Energy Corps to conduct weatherization
and renewable energy projects; a Veterans Corps to assist veterans at hospitals, nursing homes and homeless
shelters; and a Homeland Security Corps to help communities plan, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Engage Retiring Americans in Service on a Large Scale: Older Americans have a wide range of skills and
knowledge to contribute. Obama will expand and improve programs that connect individuals over the age of
55 to quality volunteer opportunities.
Expand the Peace Corps: Obama will double the Peace Corps to 16,000 by 2011. He will work with the
leaders of other countries to build an international network of overseas volunteers so that Americans work
side-by-side with volunteers from other countries.
Show the World the Best Face of America: Obama will set up an America’s Voice Initiative to send Americans
who are fluent speakers of local languages to expand our public diplomacy. He also will extend opportunities
for older individuals such as teachers, engineers, and doctors to serve overseas.

How about welfare recipeints filling these positions? Why would we want knowledgeable people here overseas?

Now this shit is just funny

BARACK OBAMA’S PLAN
Strengthen Civil Rights Enforcement
Obama will reverse the politicization that has occurred in the Bush Administration’s Department of Justice.
He will put an end to the ideological litmus tests used to fill positions within the Civil Rights Division.
Combat Employment Discrimination
Obama will work to overturn the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that curtails racial minorities’ and women’s
ability to challenge pay discrimination. Obama will also pass the Fair Pay Act to ensure that women receive
equal pay for equal work.
Expand Hate Crimes Statutes
Obama will strengthen federal hate crimes legislation and reinvigorate enforcement at the Department of
Justice’s Criminal Section.
End Deceptive Voting Practices:
Obama will sign into law his legislation that establishes harsh penalties for those who have engaged in voter
fraud and provides voters who have been misinformed with accurate and full information so they can vote.
End Racial Profiling
Obama will ban racial profiling by federal law enforcement agencies and provide federal incentives to state
and local police departments to prohibit the practice.
Reduce Crime Recidivism by Providing Ex-Offender Support
Obama will provide job training, substance abuse and mental health counseling to ex-offenders, so that they
are successfully re-integrated into society. Obama will also create a prison-to-work incentive program to
improve ex-offender employment and job retention rates.
Eliminate Sentencing Disparities
Obama believes the disparity between sentencing crack and powder-based cocaine is wrong and should be
completely eliminated.
Expand Use of Drug Courts:
Obama will give first-time, non-violent offenders a chance to serve their sentence, where appropriate, in the
type of drug rehabilitation programs that have proven to work better than a prison term in changing bad
behavior.

Especially the profiling, you know that was Muslims that crashed the planes but so we dont profile we will now search all Germans, but we cant do that cause we are profiling

The War in Iraq
Obama is the only major candidate who had the judgment to oppose the Iraq War from the beginning. He
will end the war responsibly by bringing our troops home within 16 months, pressing for a political solution
to Iraq’s civil war, and launching the diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives that are needed to bring
stability to Iraq.

If our Armed Forces cant do it, his pansy ass sure wont

Terrorism
Obama will fight terrorism and protect America with a comprehensive strategy that finishes the fight
in Afghanistan, cracks down on the al Qaeda safe-haven in Pakistan, develops new capabilities and
international partnerships, engages the world to dry up support for extremism, and reaffirms American
values.

How? Notice this piece is missing

Bring Our Troops Home
Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades
each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that
we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and
diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the
region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda.

Thought he was pulling everyone out? If we leave soldiers there for the 2 aforementioned reasons guess what, soldiers live on bases :S

Talk to our Foes and Friends
Obama is willing to meet with the leaders of all nations, friend and foe. He will do the careful preparation
necessary, but will signal that America is ready to come to the table, and that he is willing to lead. And if
America is willing to come to the table, the world will be more willing to rally behind American leadership to
deal with challenges like terrorism, and Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs.

Little late on North Korea there, glad him and Adhmenagoober are going to hang together, maybe we can get some low income Iranians here and guarantee them health care and housing?

Fight Global Poverty
Obama will embrace the Millennium Development Goal of cutting extreme poverty around the world in
half by 2015, and he will double our foreign assistance to $50 billion to achieve that goal. He will help the
world’s weakest states to build healthy and educated communities, reduce poverty, develop markets, and
generate wealth.

More increase spending, what about all these tax cuts? Why is it our job to give everyone else money when we have our own problems at home?

BUILDING A 21ST CENTURY MILITARY
The Problem
The excellence of our military is unmatched. But as a result of a misguided war in Iraq, our forces are under
pressure as never before. Obama will make the investments we need so that the finest military in the world
is best-prepared to meet 21st-century threats.
Rebuild Trust
Obama will rebuild trust with those who serve by ensuring that soldiers and Marines have sufficient training
time before they are sent into battle.
Expand the Military
We have learned from Iraq that our military needs more men and women in uniform to reduce the strain
on our active force. Obama will increase the size of ground forces, adding 65,000 soldiers to the Army and
27,000 Marines.
New Capabilities
Obama will give our troops new equipment, armor, training, and skills like language training. He will also
strengthen our civilian capacity, so that our civilian agencies have the critical skills and equipment they need
to integrate their efforts with our military.
Strengthen Guard and Reserve
Obama will restore the readiness of the National Guard and Reserves. He will permit them adequate time
to train and rest between deployments, and provide the National Guard with the equipment they need for
foreign and domestic emergencies. He will also give the Guard a seat at the table by making the Chief of the
National Guard a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

More money spent, but what about all the tax cuts

I'm tired, been working out of town, thought he was promoting hope and change, now I realize he was saying "I hope I find some change"

I took "main street" to mean mom and pop stores, i.e. not ones on the stock market.

There's a lot of talk about Bush because 1. He's still president, and 2. McCain has said on numerous issues he will continue on the same course.

How do you manage to get a 200k mortgage making 6 bucks an hour.

I'm a firm believer in universal health care, but I grew up with it and don't know what it's like under the US system.

A lot of the other stuff is focusing on the lower class and education. I don't see anything wrong with that....but a lot of it has already been in Canada for a long time.

universal health care is the biggest crock of s*** out there.  You take money from every working class that struggles to get things for their families and when they have to go to the doctor, after paying like $1500 a year for health care, you still have to pay a deductible of like $300 per visit.  Meanwhile, ppl w/ no job get covered for free.  Meds, free.  You can say that it sucks, but you are only fooling yourself that you are getting something better b/c you pay for it.  Not so.  So now you want the working class to pay even more to cover the cost of the non-working class that you are not collecting on already for health care.  Everyone gets covered and if you sit on your a** at home, that's O.K. too, we'll pay for that mole to be removed.  Frankly I'm as cold hearted as they come.  It's simple, you work, you get taken care of.  You are a productive member of society.  you don't work, then oh well, sucks to be you, maybe you should have contributed.  sit on the curb and rot for all I care, should've been a team player b****!

I'm not going to pick that all apart Joey.  I just have one question.

Quote

So which is Canada, socialist or dictatorship?  Step back and ask yourself if you've heard all of the rhetoric about how bad this would be that you believe that it would be okay to lose everything you have if you get sick enough.  I'm never going to have to worry about that.  Never.

I don't pay anything when I go to the doctor. I have insurance for meds and dental.
I personally favour a modified two-tier system.

I don't mind the look of the British two-tier system.  I'm not really trying to start any fights about anything and I know my tone was argumentative, I apologize.  I've just never really understood why people are so happy to pay a market price for something that shouldn't be considered a market item.

There are problems with our system, I'll be the first to admit that.  However, despite many of the US anti-universal health-care articles I've personally read, it isn't nearly as bad as what it has been made out to be.  Quite honestly, I would be scared as hell to live where there wasn't universal health-care after seeing the prices of getting sick in the US.

I simply don't understand why there is so much of the "I've got mine." attitude.  It's also frightening to see how many people believed to have theirs who wound up not being covered.  And I'm not talking about the movie "Sicko"  do some searches on google and ask yourself if it could happen to you.  You'd be surprised how much nicer it is to know that no matter what happens to you, no matter what disease you get, you're covered and it isn't going to cost you more than the price of your meds.

Yep, I don't want to seem like I'm looking for a fight either. Politics interests me, I like talking about it, and I believe this is a very important election, not only for the US, but for the world as a whole. I'd talk about Canadian politics too, but the majority of people wouldn't know what I'm talking about.

I guess myself and Bill (but I don't want to speak for him), being Canadians, haven't grown up in the culture of the US so it's a little hard for us to understand why you wouldn't want universal health care.

On the two tier thing...I believe in basic health care for everyone, however, I also believe that if I can afford it, I should be able to go to a private clinic for some things.

Let me ask you guys a question about universal health care..    Now I have heard this and am just curious about it...

If something is wrong with you and you have universal healthcare.    Can you go to the doctor right away?   Or do you have to wait awhile to be able to see a doctor?

The reason I ask is I have "heard" that even though all the healthcare is paid for, it takes forever to get to see a doctor..    Is this true?

Absolutely right.
Magoo can correct me if I'm wrong.

The way that the British system works at its most basic principal is this.
(Government funded - I believe it is called ISA) Basically this is the system that your tax dollars pay for.  Anyone can use this.  Anyone at all.

The second tier is generally funded by insurance, that insurance is most commonly provided by their work.  So the better your benefits the better chance you have this level of health care.  No matter what, you will not be denied health care, you won't go unwaveringly into debt that you can't get out of.

Why is this so bad?  Why can't it work in the US, aside from the fact that another system is already in place?

Untrue.  We have a family doctor.  As a common practice our family doctors (and I've had a few) reserve the first 2 - 3 hours of their day for emergent problems. IE no appointment, I'm nasty sick.  We have walk in clinics for illness where your doctor might not be able to get to you and you feel you need to be seen today.  Our emergency rooms have waiting times between 1 - 4 hours most commonly.  Mostly it's been 1 - 3 though.
