New members to our family
« on: September 30, 2008, 02:35:40 PM »
Or will be come spring time.  Didn't know where else to put this but I thought it was pretty cool.  We have a Praying Mantis that has taken up residence on the screen door going out from our family room.  (too many toys in front of it to use it)  Has been there almost 2 weeks.  Sunday night she laid her eggs there.  So come spring hopefully they will be everywhere eating all the bad bugs.

Every day, from here to there, funny things are everywhere

Very cool.  We had the same thing happen back in 2005.  Come spring 2006, those eggs never hatched.

Here's the pics I took back then.

Sad to say, but I miss having these lil guys. Don't have jack here in AZ. Just black widows, wood spiders and scorpions...ooooh

That's really cool.  Good thing you didn't leave for China a day or so earlier, you would have missed it.

lots of times thats what people think, but actually the eggs dont really hatch, there is a seem on the egg case and the mantis babies all come out of small holes on the seam, if you wernt there when they hatched and they all took off before you noticed you would think they never hatched as there is no evidence of it happening.

we have been releasing preying mantises in our backyard every summer for about the last 5 years and there are quite a few that are huge. had to teach the kids that they were good bugs even though they looked scary but there ok with them now and my son has actually found one that will hang out with him so to say. he made it a little container to sleep in and will sometimes grab it and take it into his bedroom at night so it will be safe, and then returns him to the garden the next morning :laugh2:

maybe this should be in the "pets" board.     Well, it is really cool to see all the pics, and that hatching pic is amazing, very cool.  Thanks for posting this.
